Week before last, F.P. Journe pulled the covers off of updated versions his Octa Lune references. The new models — available in platinum or red gold — have been upsized and are now offered in 40mm or 42mm, which is, interestingly, +2mm vs. prior versions. Along with the case upsize, the dial elements see some changes as well. Actually, the dial layout has been meaningfully changed, and much for the better in my view.

The revisions are quite discernible, for the most part. Then again some are rather subtle, so I will break it down for you. First, the diameter of the off-center hours/minutes dial and overlapping small seconds sub-dial has been increased. Regarding this, there are several other changes as well — the hands are no longer blue, the numerals are now applied and in white or red gold, the guilloche inner finish is gone, and the small seconds now has numerical notations every 10 seconds. The larger size really makes a difference in terms of legibility and spacing. Speaking of size, so has the date aperture been given an increase.
In fact it is now 2x its prior size — a very welcome change for those of use who are partial to nicely executed “big date” functions. You can see also the the F.P. Journe word mark and tagline “Invenit et Fecit” which were at the top perimeter of the dial are moved down near 7 o’clock, in tandem with moving the moon phase aperture up and a quarter turn or so to the left. A lot of little things here and there, but in aggregate they add up!
